Motorola Droid X

The Motorola Droid X is Verizon's latest Android device. It will be available starting July 15 for $199.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate.

The smartphone will ship running Android 2.1 but will get an Android 2.2 over-the-air update later in the summer.

Large and in charge

Motorola and Verizon certainly like to go big when they collaborate on their devices. The Droid X measures 5 inches tall by 2.6 inches wide by 0.4 inch thick and weighs 5.47 ounces.

Droid X vs. Evo 4G

The Droid X is slightly longer than the HTC Evo 4G, but it's actually thinner and a tad lighter. As far as features, both smartphones have an 8-megapixel camera with HD video capture and an HDMI port. However, the Droid X lacks a front-facing camera.

Physical buttons

Below the display, you get four shortcut keys--home, menu, back, and search. Unlike the Evo, these are physical buttons, which we like better.

Top view

On top of the smartphone, you get a power/lock button and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Left side

The left side houses the Micro-USB and HDMI ports. Like the Evo 4G, the HDMI port is the Type D standard, so you'll need to get a micro HDMI cable in order to hook it up to your HDTV. They can easily be found online for as low as $8.

Camera

On back, you'll find the Droid X's 8-megapixel camera and dual-LED flash. Like we said before, the camera is capable of 720p HD video capture, but it also has a three-mic system for capturing the best audio for the situation.

Picture quality

The Droid X's camera was a mixed bag. Despite having autofocus, sometimes our images came out blurry.

Another camera shot

Other times, the camera took pretty nice photos like this.
