Take a closer look at Jukebox Hero, a music sharing app for iOS and Android that puts party guests in charge of your playlist.

Jukebox Hero

Jukebox Hero is a useful free app that's great for parties. With it, you can allow guests to DJ your party for you using shared music from your iPhone or Android phone.

The opening screen, shown here, illustrates the two main purposes of the app. You can either create a jukebox for your party, or guests can use their phones as remotes for an existing jukebox.

In the next few screens we'll walk through the process of setting up a jukebox.

One minor annoyance of this free app is that you must register an account using either a Facebook sign-in or an e-mail address.

To create your own jukebox, you must first give it a name and a location, and then define what songs from your phone will be used to stock the jukebox. By default, all of your songs will be selected, but I recommend narrowing the scope to be more useful.

In the playlist selection menu you can choose which specific playlist will be used to populate your jukebox. There are also useful toggles for automatically playing songs from the playlist to fill dead air, or restricting songs to just the playlist.

In the main view of your jukebox you'll see the currently playing song, as well as a listing of previously played songs scrolling down vertically, and upcoming tracks scrolling across horizontally.

As the admin of this jukebox, you'll also notice a settings gear over in the upper left corner that can be useful for changing playlists, or managing the virtual tokens ("credits") given to each user.

Here's the settings menu that only the jukebox admin can see. Along with options for changing the playlist, restricting playlist access, and managing the credits guests will use to make their jukebox requests, you also have an "Announcement" capability that you can use to blast out a text message to everyone's jukebox.

From the "remote" view, party guests see a very similar view of the jukebox, minus the settings gear.

When a guest decides to pick a song, he or she is given a view of your music catalog that can be sorted by artist, song, or popularity.

Once a song is selected, guests can decide how urgently they would like the song to play, and can pay a premium in virtual tokens to jump the line. If you're feeling benevolent as the jukebox admin, you can reset everyone's token amount when they run dry.
