What happens now?
Before getting caught up in the stampede now that Verizon is officially getting the iPhone 4, it'll do to remember that America's largest cell phone carrier earned its title for a reason. No doubt, Verizon customers have demanded the iPhone for years, but let's not forget that the iPhone 4 won't have everything (like 4G speeds) and that Big Red is deepening its bench of excellent smartphones, most of them based on Flash-friendly Android. Let's check out the competition.
Motorola Droid Bionic
Just last week at CES, Motorola trotted out the Droid Bionic, a 4G LTE dual-core Android phone with HDMI output. We expect to see it in the first half of 2011.
HTC Thunderbolt
HTC also announced its first 4G LTE smartphone at CES, the Android-based HTC Thunderbolt. It will have a 1GHz processor, 8-megapixel camera, and wireless DLNA support.
Samsung 4G LTE smartphone
Samsung's 4G LTE smartphone looks like a Galaxy S series phone, just like another strong Verizon Android offering, the Samsung Fascinate. It, too, will emerge in the upcoming months.
LG Revolution
Verizon's future Android 2.2 lineup also includes LG's 4G Revolution, which has a 4.3-inch touch screen, front-facing camera, and the capability to have up to eight Wi-Fi devices on its mobile hot spot.
Motorola Droid X
If you simply can't wait, the Motorola Droid X is a strong Android specimen. It has a 4.3-inch touch screen, great multimedia features like an 8-megapixel camera with HD video capture, HDMI output, and DLNA support. It can also become a mobile hot spot.
Motorola Droid Pro
Motorola's Droid Pro is an excellent bridge device for those looking for a touch-screen Android phone with a vertical keyboard for longer compositions.
BlackBerry Bold 9650
Android isn't everyone's cup of tea, and neither are touch screens. The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is a good choice for this category, and RIM makes great keyboards.
