Door in Door

"Door in Door" just means that you can pull a trigger on the right door handle to open the front panel of the door instead of the door itself. That lets you access the in-door shelves without actually opening the fridge (technically speaking, at least).

Rotating shelf

In GE's door-in-door fridges, like the GFD28GELDS shown here, you'll also get a special shelf that rotates out of the fridge on a thick, sturdy steel plate.

Inside

You'll find a total of 27.8 cubic feet of storage space in this fridge, 18.6 of which are allocated to the fridge.

Freezer

That leaves you with a fairly sizable 9.2-cubic-foot freezer.

Ice maker

The ice maker is packed entirely into the door with a flat design that doesn't block off any of the door shelves.

Drawers

You'll also find the standard crisper bins and a deli drawer. That drawer doesn't offer multiple temperature settings like in other GE fridges, though, which is disappointing.

Touch controls

You can adjust the refrigerator's settings by tapping on a touch panel just above the ice maker.

Default setting

Speaking of those settings, we spent weeks testing them out in our climate-controlled test chamber. At the refrigerator's default setting of 37 degrees, the entire Door in Door compartment ran warm.

Coldest setting

Dialing down to the coldest setting got rid of the hot spots, but only just barely.

Door in Door openings

We ran the coldest-setting test a second time and replaced the regular door openings with Door in Door compartment openings. There was virtually no impact on performance.
