FNV Labs' Mellow smart sous vide cooker runs hot, cold, and smart

FNV Labs' Mellow sous vide cooker can keep your food cold in the water bath until you're ready to cook it. You control it all via mobile app.

The Mellow has a 4.5-liter water bath, which the company says is large enough to prepare about six servings at once.

The Mellow app, available for Android and iOS devices, can suggest cooking times according to basic food safety guidelines, as well as according to doneness

The app lets you program the cooker remotely, but it's only food-safe thanks to Mellow's ability to chill the water so that the food stays cold until you're ready for it to start cooking.

The app will remember how you've prepared things in the past to simplify programming when you want to cook them again.

Food safety is obviously a major concern with a sous vide cooker that will potentially have food sitting in it all day.

The Mellow sous vide cooker goes on sale for pre-order today for $400, and it's due to ship in 2015. FNV Labs says Mellow will sell for $500 when it becomes available for wider distribution at some unspecified point in the future.
