Coogee Surf Club Pool
Photographer: Anthony Roach
Speciality: landscape, street
Biography: Anthony grew up in Sydney's Sutherland Shire. A teacher in high school taught Anthony how to use a camera, develop film and print images, and ever since then he was hooked.
Anthony has always lived near the sea, going on to study marine biology at university. The smell of the sea, the morning's first light over water, the evocative lines of the landscape when the sea washes over the shore, the uniqueness of the ecosystems and the detail on each and every rock inspires him. He says that getting up early and taking photographs by the sea is like a form of therapy.
His other speciality is street photography, and he has a penchant for using slow exposures and handheld shots in low light to capture mood and movement. Anthony's work has been licensed for posters, cards by Art Group and used for book covers, corporate advertising and CGI-based car advertising. He was awarded the Australian Camera magazine's Agfa Showcase Overall Winner in 1998 with one of his pool images.
As well as gallery shows, Anthony also sells his work around the world and at one stage, one of his art posters was sold in Ikea stores worldwide.
More of Anthony's work can be seen on his website, www.anthonyroach.com.au.

I call this the blue pool. This shot was taken in 1997 on a Nikon F70 and a Sigma 24mm f/2.8 lens. It uses the colour from the surrounding street lights and reciprocity effects from the long exposure to get the amazing colour combination.
Exposure: Nikon F70, 24mm, f/22, 1.5 minutes, Fuji Velvia film.
Salamander Bay
This was shot taken in 1997 using my Nikon F70.
Exposure: Nikon F70, 24mm, f/22, three minutes, Fuji Velvia film.
Beijing
This shot shows locals stepping out in Beijing in 2009. We were getting out of a taxi at a popular place for bars and restaurants next to a lake not far from Tiananmen. When we stepped out we saw this amazing scene with an open-air dance free-for-all — old and young people boot scootin', disco dancing and getting down.
Exposure: Canon G10, f/4.5, 0.4 second, ISO 400.
Meiji Shrine
A bride at Meiji Shrine in 2007.
Exposure: Nikon D2X, 70-200mm, f/5, 1/1000, ISO 400.
Do a bong with us
This shot was taken in 2009. Just for the record, a bong is a type of drink on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. The blur and colour of this image really sets this image up.
Exposure: Canon G10, f/3.5, 0.5 second, ISO 200.
Bird's nest
The "Bird's nest" stadium in Beijing, 2009.

Harajuku Station
This shot was taken in Tokyo, Japan in 2007. This is a popular place for Tokyo youth to dress up and express themselves. If you ever go make sure you ask nicely first before taking a photo.
Exposure: Nikon D2X, 70-200mm, f/6.3, 1/500, ISO 400.
Jimmy's Beach
In Port Stephens, 2008.
Exposure: Hasselblad H3D, HCD 4/28mm lens, f/16, 10 seconds, ISO 50.
Jazz trumpeter
This was at Fritzel's Bar on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, 2009, a great traditional jazz bar.
Exposure: Canon G10, f/3.5, 1/4, ISO 800.
Sunrise at Wylies Pool
This shot was taken in 2000.
Exposure: Linhof Master Technika 4x5, Schneider Symmar 90mm XL on Fuji Velvia in Sinar Panorama Roll film holder, f/22, six minutes.
Sunrise at Bronte Pool
From the same year as the previous shot, this was at the absolute crack of dawn and the exposure was so long that many people actually walked right in front of the camera and were doing laps during the shot. They didn't appear in the final image because they didn't stop for long enough.
Exposure: Linhof Master Technika 4x5, Schneider Symmar 90mm XL on Fuji Velvia in Sinar Panorama Roll film holder, f/22, 12 minutes.
Valentine's Day in Beijing

Gav and the boys from Beijing
My friend Gavin and I were walking through Beijing and met some locals. They were minding cars and acting as bouncers for a flashy restaurant. While they couldn't speak English they had no problems getting in on the act. Photography has that way of breaking down language barriers.
Exposure: Nikon D2X, 24-70mm, f/4.5, 1/60, ISO 400.
Tokyo Fish Market
As a marine biologist this place is endlessly fascinating, but you take your life in your hands when you go for a wander as these guys whizz around at speed with complete disregard for tourists. Taken in 2007.
Exposure: Canon G10, f/7.1, 1/60, ISO 400.
