This year's models have identical bodies to their predecessors, but here is a closer look at the new camcorders.
The G40 is Canon's most pro-ish consumer camcorder, with full manual controls including the ring on the lens and a control dial on the bottom, as well as a removable lens hood. Without that it's pretty compact.
Like the G30, it takes two SD cards and has an electronic viewfinder, though you can't pull it out or tilt it.
The G40 has the same large zoom rocker switch that you find on professional models.
In addition to the usual accessories, with the G40 you get a remote and a high-capacity battery.
All three models in the R series are identical save the memory configuration and NFC. The lowest-end R700 lacks internal memory and NFC. The R72 with 32GB built in and the R70 has 16GB both have NFC.
You see that humongous double-capacity battery? In order to improve battery life, Canon now bundles in a high-capacity battery instead of making any changes to the camcorder itself. Canon claims 180 minutes of recording time per charge.
You can also get the camera in white.
This is what you get in the box of an R series camcorder. However Canon did not update this shot with the high-capacity battery, though.
