Bill Gates made the first stop on his college tour on Monday, speaking at the University of California Berkeley, before touring one of its biology departments.
Gates heads to the lab
Bill Gates talks with UC Berkeley professor Dan Portnoy as he tours Portnoy's biology lab. Portnoy's research looks at the listeria bacteria and how the immune system interacts with it, a subject that has implications for vaccine creation.
The tour followed the morning speech that kicked off his three-day college speaking tour.
Asking questions
During his tour of the lab, Gates had plenty of questions for Portnoy and his staff about the intricacies of their research.
Honorary Golden Bear
Gates carries a stack of papers as well as the Cal hat he was given Monday after speaking at UC Berkeley.
Speaking to the students
The main public event at Berkeley on Monday was Gates' speech to a packed Zellerbach Hall where he spoke on the importance for students of devoting time to the world's key problems.
