Apple iPad Pro (10.5-inch, 2017)

Apple's newest iPad Pro looks... well, like an iPad Pro. But its screen-to-bezel ratio's improved.

The 10.5-inch model isn't much bigger than the 9.7-inch Pro, but fits in more screen. It has an improved 2,224x1,668-pixel resolution.

Why get the 10.5-inch Pro over the 12.9? It's cheaper, and it'll fit in your bag better. Both models have the same processor, cameras, and storage options.

At 1.03 pounds, it's the same weight as Apple's Spring 2017 iPad, and a hair heavier than the 2016 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

It's 6.1mm thin, same as previous iPad Pros.

This is space gray. It also comes in rose gold, gold and silver.

Apple's Smart Keyboard ($159) is still the slimmest Smart Connector-attached keyboard case.

Keep in mind: this iPad's altered size (9.8 x 6.8 inches) means it'll need all-new cases.

It feels fine to hold like a magazine or book, and nowhere near as large as the 12.9-inch Pro.

Apple's Smart Keyboard doesn't cover the back of the iPad Pro, which means you'll need yet another accessory (ugh).

The A10X processor is really fast: faster, in fact, than the entry-level 12-inch Macbook.

If you're serious about using the iPad Pro as a laptop, some bad news... there still aren't any trackpad-enabled keyboards.

Improved front and rear cameras are as good as the iPhone 7's. 

The Pro still uses Lightning, which can connect to some USB 3 accessories via dongles. Storage configurations now range from 64GB to a crazy 512GB.

Like the last iPad Pro models, quad speakers provide decent sound.

Who is this for? Consider that iOS 11, which will show off the iPad Pro's capabilities greatest, isn't here yet.

The brighter, anti-reflective display looks good in any situation, even outdoors.

Using an iPad Pro while standing on a subway is still not a good idea.

Someday, maybe, Apple will expand its Smart Connector accessories. But not today.

The Smart Keyboard for this larger iPad Pro has slightly larger keys, but that's it.

It's still not backlit...

...and it's still pretty expensive.

That being said, it's more portable than other solutions. But it is not lap-friendly.

A new ProMotion display means faster screen-scrolling and up to 120Hz performance. And Apple's pressure-sensitive Pencil has lower latency.

The Pencil was already fast. It's faster now, but unless you're a hard-core graphic designer, you probably won't notice.

Extra Pencil-specific markup and note-taking features will arrive with iOS 11. But the Pencil is the same otherwise... and still has an easy-to-lose cap.

Why isn't there a folio-type version?

With these accessories, and with iOS 11 not here yet, the iPad Pro still feels designed for the same uses as before.

A new $129 leather sleeve holds the iPad Pro and Pencil, but can't be opened like the Smart Cover.

It feels designed for the types of artists who might use the Pro as a sketch tablet.

At least it's a place to hold Pencil?

iPad Pro, you're a lot of speed and screen. But the software and accessories haven't evolved yet (stay tuned for iOS 11).

In the fall, the iPad Pro could become a lot more useful. But right now, it's faster and bigger while offering more of the same.

Although, a new TouchID button is faster.

And yes, there is a headphone jack.
