A closer look at Acer's white Aspire S13 laptop

The Acer Aspire S13 offers great value for the money, and a unique design, too...

The white version, starting at $800, £650 or AU$1,399, has matte aluminum surfaces that resist oily fingerprints.

Even the aluminum lid has a special ridged texture to keep it looking good. It might look like plastic, but it's cool to the touch.

You also get a matte antireflective screen, unlike many recent thin laptops. It's a crisp 1080p IPS panel with wide viewing angles.

And -- surprise! -- it's a touchscreen, too. One of the only ones we've see without a glass front.

Some creature comforts are lacking, though...

The keyboard is thin to the point where it makes typing feel a bit stiff and stunted.

The touchpad's palm rejection isn't adequate. I found the mouse cursor would jump around a bit when I would type things, too.

And while you get all the basics, there isn't a great port selection on this Windows 10 PC...

You'll find USB-C, USB 3.0 and HDMI video output on the right...

...and only another USB 3.0 port, headset jack, and a very shallow SD card slot on the left.

Here's how shallow the SD card slot is. You'll want to remove it immediately after you transfer files, and you'll need to figure out where to put the stopper.

You can't charge the laptop over USB-C, either -- you'll need to use the included proprietary charger.

Still, an aluminum laptop at this price, with excellent performance, battery life, and plenty of fast solid-state storage is nothing to sneeze at.
