aerogarden harvest on table

You might not get giant tomatoes like the ones pictured here, but a good smart garden will churn out healthy greens and fresh herbs for cooking and cocktails.

Herbs are about the fastest way to make a good meal or cocktail great. A reliable smart garden will provide you a steady source of basil, mint, parsley and thyme no matter what the weather outside looks like. If you hurry, you can score AeroGarden's Harvest pod garden for just $50 (normally $165) during Day 2 of Amazon Prime Day. If you're counting, this marks the lowest price we've seen for the popular grower on Amazon in several years CNET's shopping team has been tracking them.

If you're wondering how well smart gardens work, we've tested several and most of the leading models -- AeroGarden, Click & Grow and Lettuce Grow -- perform as advertised. Just pop the seed pods into the base and the built-in LED grow lights and water reservoir will take care of the rest. There's an app to monitor and adjust the light schedule, and remind you when more water is needed. Pretty smart stuff.

The Harvest has space for six seed pods so you can grow six different herbs at once or double up and grow more of your three favorites. You can also grow lettuce, some vegetables and flowers, but I've found that the juice isn't quite worth the squeeze, since the overall yield isn't much.

Your purchase comes with a six-pod gourmet herb seed kit, including Genovese basil, curly parsley, dill, thyme, Thai basil and mint, as well as a 3-ounce bottle of plant nutrients to help those herbs grow.
