NBN rolling out to 1.9 million new premises: Are you on the list?

After officially excluding Fibre to the Premises technology from the future of the National Broadband Network, NBN Co has released its first "multi-technology mix" rollout plan, indicating how the next 1.9 million premises will be connected to the NBN.

The list includes more than 400 cities, suburbs and towns in every state and territory across Australia, and details how each region will be connected -- using either wireless connectivity, or the multi-technology mix that incorporates Fibre to the Node technology. In those places where the FTTP build has already commenced, this technology has also been incorporated into the rollout plan.

The first indications that the NBN rollout would move away from connections to individual premises came in April when Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull said a new "multi-technology approach" would help the Government meet its goal of delivering the NBN "sooner [and] at less cost for taxpayers". Future FTTP builds were officially shelved last month.

However, the technology is not completely off the table, with NBN Co chief Bill Morrow today saying it may be necessary to compensate for flaws in existing copper network infrastructure.

"When we actually get into a given neighbourhood, we may discover that the copper is not in the condition that we had expected it to be in or above the threshold level that we need it to be in," Morrow told the ABC. "So you may see an alternative technology move from a Fibre to the Node over to either a Fixed Wireless or maybe even a Fibre to the Premises."

Morrow also indicated that NBN Co could opt for "fibre closer to the home" by extending fibre further from the node towards homes and businesses in order to increase capacity.

For now, NBN Co has updated its rollout map to include the new build locations, and you can see the full state-by-state list of locations included in the new construction plan (along with the number of premises connected and the technology used) below.
