Revenue down, profit up for Novell

Business software maker bounces back from a year ago, when it took a multimillion-dollar restructuring charge.

Business software maker Novell posted a preliminary quarterly profit on Tuesday, bouncing back from a year-earlier loss when it took a $38 million restructuring charge.

The Waltham, Mass.-based company reported net income available to common stockholders of $23.7 million, or 6 cents a share, compared with a loss of $5 million, or 1 cent a share, a year earlier.

Revenue fell from a year earlier, dropping to $244.9 million from $287.6 million, on weak sales of older products, the company said.

Novell said the results were preliminary because it is conducting a voluntary review of its historical stock options, which could lead to adjustments in its accounting.
