Netscape Communications today announced that Netscape Navigator 2.0 is shipping with prices starting at $49. The final version can be downloaded from the company's site and is available for Microsoft Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows NT, and the Macintosh.

Netscape Navigator 2.0 supports Live Objects including JavaScript, Java applets, streaming audio, and 3D.

Company officials claim the Navigator browser represents 85 percent of usage on the Web; Netscape competitor Microsoft claims that 30 percent of Windows 95 users surf the Net with its Internet Explorer browser.

According to Rob Enderle, an analyst with Giga Information Group, "You could create arguments for both, but when it comes down to it, they are relatively equal. Overall, the compelling argument that Netscape has to overcome is that Microsoft offers the same service for free and that has to hurt."
