As high-speed access proliferates and with the closing of the America Online-Time Warner merger, the Internet's promise of a mass market for interactive multimedia seems closer than ever before. Yet comparatively few services are up and running, and those that are don't appear to be profitable. Indeed, online news, a leading form of convergence content, has lately been in retreat.

Certainly, more questions have been asked than answered. What's the proverbial "killer app"? What kind of content do people really want? Can start-ups compete with established media companies, and can the latter avoid cannibalizing their businesses while competing online? What's the revenue model, anyway?
