Great iPhone games on sale for 99 cents

A bunch of really great iPhone games went on sale for a limited time over the weekend. We've collected the pick of the bunch here if you're looking for a bargain.

• Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

  In iPhone-sized 3D, your tiny Tomb Raider is getting up to her old tricks: killing monsters and nicking temple treasures. It's not the best port of a franchise we've ever seen, but it's still playable, and if you've ever wanted Lara Croft in your pants, this is probably the closest you're going to get. Snap!

• Flapcraft

  Imagine you're a Viking learning how to do trick flying on a log. That's Flapcraft, in a nutshell; out of the nutshell, there are upgrades for your flying log and a whole bunch of tricks, from the simple to the crazy difficult.

• Peggle

  PopCap is particularly adept at creating those endlessly addictive arcade-style games, and Peggle is one of its best: kind of a strange cross between pong and pinball.

• Scribblenauts Remix

  Scribblenauts Remix combines the gameplay we know and love with a touchscreen interface for a cool adventure taken from both previous Scribblenauts games with some iOS-specific levels thrown in. It's pretty rad, but extremely short, which made its AU$5.49 price seem a bit steep. A buck is much more reasonable.

• Shadowgun

  If you're looking for a new sci-fi space-bounty-hunter first-person shooter, Shadowgun will be right up your oddly specific alley. In your role as John Slade, your job is to hunt down the evil scientist super villain, leaving a bloodbath of robots and aliens in your wake. It looks spectacular and handles beautifully, so FPS fans should definitely check this one out.

• World of Goo

  The balls of goo have two problems: they have a yearning for exploration, but are unfortunately extremely tasty. In order to explore and escape to safety, the goo balls need to form structures to reach the exit — which is where, of course, you come in, using the touchscreen to create ever more creative solutions to reach the next level.

• Contre Jour HD

  Literally "against daylight", Contre Jour is a puzzle game after World of Goo and Limbo, an atmospheric monochrome adventure that sees you stretching and manipulating your environment to get your little guy to the exit. It has 60 gorgeous levels and 180 collectable lights, an original piano soundtrack by David Ari Leon and a bunch of achievements to nab.

• Jelly Defense

  We don't know what it is about balls of glop, but never mind. Jelly Defense is, as the title suggests, a tower defence game that sees you playing on the side of the Jelly legion to defend your territory against the evil, monochrome hordes.

• Grand Prix Story

  Grand Prix Story isn't just a racing game; in it, you are starting out in the world of Grand Prix as an all-but-penniless entrepreneur. Your goal is to build your own team and fleet of cars, which you can then customise and race in the Grand Prix.

• Street Fighter IV Volt

  Street Fighter IV Volt was pretty much the same as Street Fighter IV on iOS. It added two things: a new character roster and online multiplayer. For AU$0.99, it's a downright score.

• Dungeon Hunter 2

  Gameloft makes some pretty ace games, and its Dungeon Hunter series is among the best action RPGs we've seen on the iPhone. It looks and feels fantastic, and even includes a co-op multiplayer mode for that Gauntlet-style dungeon-crawling we love. If you have mates you want to play with, now's the time to get in on the action.

• Bumpy Road

  Bumpy Road is a strange little game. You play as an elderly couple out on a leisurely drive, collecting memories along the way. The gameplay is not what you'd expect, though: instead of guiding the car, you use your finger to change the shape of the road to help steer them past obstacles and collect items.

• Super Crossfire HD

  We all love a good 2D space shooter. Super Crossfire HD is one of the prettiest we've seen — and has fast and frantic action to boot. If you're looking for a new one, it's definitely worth a shot (LOL).

• Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard

  Shadow Vanguard is a great little port of the beloved series. It looks sharp and controls well, with a crisp HUD and 11 missions to take down a terrorist group. Shooters of this calibre don't often come along at this price, so check it out while it lasts.
