Autodesk unit upgrades tools

Autodesk unit Discreet has upgraded its Combustion 2 software, used by video and filmmakers for adding visual effects, motion graphics and 2D animation. Version 2 lets people work in multiple formats, including video, high-definition television and 64-bit color, which is required for feature film production. Tools new to version 2 include an editable view that shows how multiple layers in the production process interact; a 2D particle system for creating effects such as rain and explosions; a motion and text graphics module; and garbage masking technology, which lets editors extract objects from live footage and use them in elements in other scenes, that is compatible with Discreet's online visual effects systems. On display at computer graphics show Siggraph in Los Angeles through August 16, Combustion 2 is expected to ship by year's end for $3,495, the price unchanged from version 1.
