America Online has extended a deal with Akamai Technologies, the maker of technology that helps speed network traffic, the companies said Wednesday.

The expanded deal calls for Akamai to install its edge servers within AOL's backbone network worldwide, where the servers will act as a private-content delivery network for AOL members.

Financial details of the deal were not released.

Akamai's technology allows customers to avoid Internet congestion by storing pieces of Web sites, applications or streaming media in hundreds of servers located inside local networks around the world. Customers can then download content from servers close to them, instead of going to the congested home site.

The technology was once white-hot, but the company has struggled as the market for Internet services has gotten tighter.
