Remember when people actually celebrated the start of 2016? Ah, so young. So naive.

It's not too late for this year to make a comeback.

With many social media users down in the dumps about 2016, a trending hashtag suggests how to put the brakes on this runaway train of a year.

Also making waves: Rapper J. Cole's unexpected music video release and his even-more-surprising disses.

Social Cues is our guide on what's trending across Facebook and Twitter. Here's what people are talking about Friday:

#How2016CanRedeemItself: With less than a month left of the year that many social media users are convinced is a stinking, rotten mess, a trending hashtag suggests how 2016 can make amends. Ideas include David Bowie returning in a spaceship, hitting the reset button and somehow bringing on a giant meteor. I'm not sure that this year can be redeemed, but those are all pretty good starts.

J. Cole: The rapper released on Friday a surprise 40-minute documentary titled "Eyez." It includes a music video for his song "False Prophet," with the clip spreading across social media. Twitter users are dissecting the lyrics and speculating that the artist takes jabs at Kanye West and Drake in not-so-subtle lines. Cole comments on West's recent stage rants and attacks Drake for using a ghostwriter (Drake has described him as a collaborator). More than 13,000 people have tweeted about the new song, while 130,000 people are talking about it on Facebook.

Houston Rockets: An intense game between the Texas basketball team and the Golden State Warriors wrapped up in double overtime as the Rockets edged their way to victory. The game ended 132-127, with the Warriors losing for only the third time this season. Twitter users celebrated the Rockets after the team ended the Warriors' 12-game winning streak. On Facebook, highlights of the game were trending and being talked about by more than 120,000 people.

Draymond Kick: The standout moment in the fierce face-off was Warriors power forward Draymond Green landing a kick on the Rockets' James Harden. This isn't Green's first mishap with his feet of fury; the NBA sent a preseason memo, stating that officials would watch for unnecessary kicks after Green was caught kicking another player in the groin. Fans are now debating whether his latest kick was intentional.

Mauna Loa, Hawaii: Where's your tropical paradise now? A foot of snow could fall this Friday in the Aloha State, as a winter storm warning shuffles through the region. The snow is expected to hit heaviest in high-altitude areas, above 9,000 feet. Hawaii's Volcanoes National Parks services has even closed the Mauna Loa summit. The bizarre weather has Facebook users chatting about this phenomenon.
