Lamborghini production suspended in Italy as coronavirus spreads
The Italian supercar-maker has shut production down for over a week as Italy battles the virus outbreak.
Lamborghini has taken the major step of closing its production facility in Sant'Agata Bolognese as the coronavirus pandemic spreads in Italy.
The supercar-maker announced last week the plant would close on March 13, and will reopen on March 25.
"This measure is an act of social responsibility and high sensibility toward our people, in the extraordinary situation in which we find ourselves right now in Italy and which is also evolving abroad due to the worldwide spread of the coronavirus," Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali said in a statement.
Coronavirus updates
He added that Lamborghini will continually assess the situation, collaborate with local officials and "restart with energy in the right moment." The statement suggests the production suspension may last longer than the initial week and a half.
Italy's other major supercar marque, Ferrari, announced last week that its plants in Maranello and Modena will shut down until March 27.
The coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, has quickly and continuously forced automakers to rethink vehicle launches and other areas of the business. Many automakers in Europe and the US have also temporarily suspended production in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19.
