Traffic spikes at university sites

At-home traffic to university Web sites skyrocketed during the week ended Aug. 12 as students returned to classes and accessed college sites, according to Nielsen/NetRatings. The research firm said Harvard.edu hit the top spot with 244,000 unique visitors, increasing 76 percent from the previous week's 139,000 visitors. University of Wisconsin at Madison's Wisc.edu was No. 2 with 202,000 visitors, increasing 40 percent from the previous week. Cornell.edu was up 37 percent with 197,000 visitors, followed by Texas A&M's Tamu.edu with 182,000 visitors, up 36 percent; and University of Michigan's Umich.edu with 267,000 surfers, up 32 percent.
