Microsoft has asked a federal judge to reconsider a ruling that cast some doubt on whether the word Windows is a legitimate trademark.
In March, a federal judge questioned the software giant's claim on the word Windows in a ruling refusing the company's request to shut down Lindows. Microsoft is suing Lindows, which makes a Linux-based operating system, alleging it's unfairly trading on the Windows name. In a filing submitted Friday, Microsoft called Windows "one of the world's best-known trademarks" and said it should be a protected because, among other things, it is not a general term for operating systems.
