Katie Couric to bolt from ABC News for Yahoo, report says
Couric's move to the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company is just another example of Marissa Mayer's focus on media.
The deal has not been finalized, and the report said that the move had nothing to do with Couric's talk show on the network, which had been suffering in ratings.
The move comes as Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has been increasingly focused on media. Details emerged of a possible collaboration between Couric and Yahoo this summer, when negotiations were taking place. Couric already hosted a segment for Yahoo and ABC called "Katie's Take." Couric will join New York Times columnist David Pogue at Yahoo as another one of Mayer's high-profile journalistic poaches. Kara Swisher's AllThingsD has also reported that Ryan Seacrest is in talks with the company about content ideas.
At a conference in San Francisco earlier this week, Mayer said Yahoo is about "entertaining." "When you look at, 'What is Yahoo's core verb?' Some companies aim to connect. Some companies aim to organize," she said. "Us, it's been around entertaining."
Indeed, it looks like it.
