European Commission welcomes .eu

The European Commission says it supports the adoption of the .eu top-level domain by the Council of Telecommunications Ministries of the Regulation. According to the European Commission, .eu will complement existing country-code domains, such as .uk for the United Kingdom, .fr for France and .es for Spain. The European Commission said it will create the necessary infrastructure for the new domain, such as selecting a private, nonprofit group to manage .eu and implement rules to safeguard public-policy issues. European Commissioner Erkki Liikanen said in a statement the new domain "will create a truly European identity in cyberspace." The European Commission said it proposed the introduction of .eu as part of its strategy to bolster Internet use in Europe.
