Dark Horse dangles 50 free digital comics

The comics publisher is offering the first issues of 50 of its books for free, both through its Web site and its mobile apps.

Free digital comics! That always gets comic book fans revved up, and the latest batch can be had courtesy of Dark Horse Comics.

The comic book house, which was founded in 1986, is celebrating the two-year anniversary of Dark Horse Digital by offering free digital editions of the first issues of 50 different comics. The freebies include a variety of titles such as Joss Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 No. 1" and "Serenity: Those Left Behind No. 1," Felicia Day's "The Guild No. 1," Mike Mignola's "Hellboy: Seed of Destruction No. 1," and John Ostrander's "Star Wars: Legacy No. 1."

You can download the entire batch in one shot through the Dark Horse Comics Web site, though you'll need to register for a free account first. You can also grab titles one at a time through the Dark Horse Comics iOS or Android app.

Comic book buffs better act fast. Dark Horse told CNET that the promotion ends on Friday, April 26, at 9 a.m. PT.

Correction at 8:13 a.m. PT: The anniversary was misidentified. Dark Horse Comics is marking the two-year anniversary of its digital efforts.
