Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's first downloadable content (DLC) release is coming next month, game developer Infinity Ward has announced.

Speaking on the Call of Duty Elite Web show "Roll Call," Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling said the DLC will be made available to Xbox Live users on January 24, Joystiq reported today. As in previous Call of Duty DLC launches, the content will be made available on the PlayStation 3 and PC at a later point. Bowling didn't say when that might be.

However, before the game's players get too excited, beware the catch: the DLC will only be available to Call of Duty Elite paid subscribers.

Activision launched Call of Duty Elite in November. The service comes in both free and paid versions. The free option lets users create player profiles, form public groups and "private clans" with other players, and access Call of Duty Elite apps. The $49.99-per-year paid option includes all that, but adds free access to the franchise's DLC. It's currently available to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners. A PC version is expected to launch soon.

Call of Duty Elite got off to a rough start last month. Just hours after its launch, the service's many features were buckling under the pressure of "hundreds of thousands of players" signing up. In response, Activision subsidiary Beachhead Studio said that it was working "around the clock to increase our capacity," adding that the number of people who signed up for the service was "exceeding even our most optimistic expectations." Since then, the service has been running with few hiccups.

Exactly what Infinity Ward has planned for the first Modern Warfare 3 DLC launch has not been divulged. Bowling would only say on "Roll Call" that the launch will feature a "variety of things that players have never seen before."

Modern Warfare 3 launched last month. In just 16 days, the title generated over $1 billion in revenue, making it the most successful video game launch ever.
