Amazon's 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD is a bit cheaper today.

When customers check out the tablet on Amazon's site, a pop-up is displayed, informing them of a $50 deal. After placing the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD in their shopping cart, customers can input the promotional code "FireHD89" at checkout to get the deal.

Amazon is only offering the deal for today, and it's limited to one unit per customer. Only U.S.-based customers can take advantage of the deal.

Amazon launched the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD line earlier this year, helping to stoke the flames of an ever hotter battle among tablet makers. The 16GB, Wi-Fi-only model typically retails for $299. The 4G-equipped 32GB tablet sets customers back $499. With today's offer, the cheaper model goes for $249 and the 4G version $449 after the discount is taken.

The Kindle Fire HD earned high marks from CNET Reviews editors, getting four stars out of a possible five. In his review, CNET senior editor Eric Franklin said that the Kindle FIre HD 8.9 bests all other slates for "a pure media consumption experience."
