Google's media streaming ball, the Nexus Q, won't be getting an update or a re-debut at this year's annual Google I/O, according to a new report.

Citing sources, All Things D says the $299 spherical device, which was first shown off at last year's I/O and scrapped just a month later, will be absent from the proceedings. That's despite a pledge from Google last year to reintroduce the product after retooling it.

Google did not respond to a request for comment. We will update this story if we get a response.

The Nexus Q, which earned a 2.5 star rating from CNET last June, was a media streaming device plugged into Google's Play store and designed to interact with Google's Android devices over Wi-Fi networks and through near-field communications. It was given out as a freebie to developers, and put on sale to everyone else for $299.

Last July, just a month after debuting the Q, Google announced plans to shelve the current iteration of the product -- which it referred to as an "early preview" -- indefinitely so that the company could "work on making it even better." As an olive branch, the company offered those who pre-ordered the device a free unit once the final model shipped.

Google's annual developers conference kicks off on Wednesday, May 15. For a list of what you should actually expect there, go here.
