Google Play, YouTube to rent 600 MGM titles

Google is quickly boosting the number of film titles available for rent on YouTube and Google Play, the software store that services Android mobile devices.

Google is trying to make a video destination out of the revamped Android Market, now known as Google Play.

The company announced today that a pact with Metro Goldwyn Mayer will bring 600 of the famed studio's movies to Google Play, the software store that services Android mobile devices. The treasure trove of film includes such hits as "Rain Main," "Get Shorty" and "Thelma and Louise."

YouTube's premium rental service will also receive access to the same titles. Google typically charges between $1.99 and $3.99 for film rentals.

Google is likely to add the option to buy films on Google Play as soon as this summer, movie-industry sources told CNET last month. The old Android Market was struggling to persuade users to spend money via the service.

In recent weeks, Google has renamed the service and added some spiffy new upgrades.Among those are several new licensing deals.
