iPad 3 'to be same same price' as iPad 2

We shouldn't have to shell out any more for the new iPad, as it'll cost the same as the iPad 2, according to rumours.

Good news -- the iPad 3 should be the same price as the current iPad, according to a rumour.

9to5Mac reports that previous rumours saying the iPad 3 would be $70-80 more expensive are nonsense, citing its anonymous tipster Mr X. Rather, the iPad 3 will cost the same as the existing iPad 2 models in the US, so we can only assume that'll stay the same for the UK too.

So hopefully we shouldn't have to pay more for the privilege for looking at the fabled retina display.

This would also be in keeping with Apple's pricing policy, whereby new models traditionally cost the same as the ones they're replacing. Older models are then reduced in price, or taken out of circulation.

If the iPad 3 pricing remains the same, we can expect to pay £399 for the 16GB Wi-Fi-only model, £479 for the 32GB, and £559 for the 64GB. The 3G + Wi-Fi model would cost £499 for the 16GB, £579 for 32GB, and £659 for the 64GB.

Apple is also rumoured to be launching an 8GB iPad that'll be cheaper than existing models, but we'll have to wait until Wednesday to see if that comes to pass. As we will to see if Apple launches an updated Apple TV, and whether the iPad 3 looks exactly the same as the iPad 2. A smaller iPad is also rumoured to follow in the autumn.

The retina display is said to be the iPad 3's big selling point, doubling the screen resolution to 2,048x1,536-pixels. It's such a strong selling point, Apple could name the device the iPad HD, according to the case makers, that is.
