Raspberry Pi gets 5-megapixel camera module

The credit-card sized Raspberry Pi will soon get the addition of an equally tiny camera module.

The credit-card sized Raspberry Pi will soon get the addition of an equally tiny camera module.

The module is almost as small as the computer itself, currently sporting a resolution of 5 megapixels — a drop from the 14-megapixel prototype module — and attaches via ribbon cable. Estimated pricing sits at around US$20-$25, with expected shipping from October. It will also be able to offer HD video recording. Sample photos from the camera can also be seen at the developers' blog post.

The camera could potentially be used for applications like robotics and home automation. Raspberry Pi has proved to be so popular that, at the Raspberry Jam event in Cambridge, the Pi's founder Eben Upton said production had been ramped up to 4000 units per day.
