Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC: The 30-inch upgrade

Forget CPUs, memory and bigger hard drives -- the ultimate PC improvement is the Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC, a massive 30-inch monitor

Crave reckons Dell founder and CEO Michael Dell may have issues with inadequacy. He's already given the go-ahead for the insanely large 20-inch laptop, and now he's brought us Dell's second 30-inch monitor in as many years.

We've just got our hands on the brand new Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC -- the replacement for the existing 3007WFP, and boy are we excited. Sure, its predecessor was amazing -- but this is even better. It has improved contrast (1,000:1), a faster response time (8ms vs 14ms), and a 92 per cent colour gamut so you can see more colours.

We have to admit -- the subjective difference between the new HC edition and the original isn't immediately obvious. Professional display junkies will be able to see the improvements if they concentrate really hard (colours look a tad richer, there's little blurring and the contrast is very good) but the rest of you will emit something that sounds very much like, "Huh?"

Whatever the difference between the two, there's nothing quite like sitting in the giant shadow of a 30-inch display running at 2,560x1,600-pixels. If you've got an inferiority complex about something, this £950 treat is the bright red Ferrari of monitors.

We'll put it through its paces in a full review soon. -RR
