Weekly Troubleshooting Utilities Update
This week there are all of three updates available, and these are for the maintenance utility OnyX, the cleanup utility Tidy Up, and a new data recovery utility called Disk Drill.
Our utilities update report is a list of updates for Mac utilities that have been released in the past week. Though a utility can be any tool that helps you perform a routine task (including image manipulation and synchronization), our focus in this column is to bring you those tools that help in troubleshooting Mac hardware and software problems.
This week there are all of three updates available, and these are for the maintenance utility OnyX, the cleanup utility Tidy Up, and a new data recovery utility called Disk Drill.
The latest version of OnyX has been in beta development status for the past few weeks, and has finally been released as a full release. Overall this update is a relatively minor change, with new options and features being the ability to run from nonadministrative accounts, and managing the latest version of iTunes. In addition there is now Hungarian localization, and new options for managing the Log bash. If you have been running the beta in the past few weeks, you should update to the latest version. OnyX and other software from Titanium Software is free.
The second utility updated this week is Tidy Up, which is mainly used to reduce hard-drive clutter by finding duplicate files on all mounted file systems. The program has a number of filtering options for narrowing searches. The latest version adds an auto-update feature, and also adds support for iTunes 10. In addition there are a number of small bug fixes that have been applied. Tidy Up is $30 for a license.
The last update this week is to Disk Drill, which is a data recovery utility for finding and recovering lost or deleted files from a variety of media, including hard drives and memory cards. The program also includes a "Recovery Vault" feature that, when enabled, allows for easier recovery of deleted items by maintaining file names and other information about the file that are usually retained in the disk directory. Disk Drill is free, but this is only while it is in beta development, so if you use it be cautioned that it may have a few bugs, and soon will probably require a license purchase.
