Fix for Preview error? Our QuickTime 4.0 MacFixIt Report notes a problem where, when trying to save a Photoshop file, a message appears that says: "Could not build a preview because of a problem with QuickTime." A couple of readers pointed out that this is another glitch that should be solved by updating to the full, rather than the minimum, version of QuickTime.

QuickTime QD3D oddity Meanwhile, after updating to QuickTime 4.0.1, a reader went back and selected to do the Custom update option. From the list of files that appeared, the reader found that the QuickDraw 3D component was listed as not installed. So he selected to install it. This resulted in a new file called QuickTime QD3D in his System Folder. Oddly, when he checked this file in Conflict Catcher, the following description appeared: "...I shouldn't even be here. I am very confused. Who am I? What am I? And what are all these crazy blue donuts doing around here?"

When I tried this, I found the same thing. I additionally noted that QuickTime for Java was listed as not installed. When I selected this, it installed a file called QTJava.zip in Extensions/MRJ Libraries/MRJClasses. (Thanks, Tony Quan.)

Update: For more humorous messages, try turning on Balloon Help and check out the files in the QuickTime Extensions folder. (Thanks, David Vasilevsky.)
