CheckFree discontinued; Free Quicken 98 Deluxe; Release 4? Quicken CheckFree discontinued; Free Quicken 98 Deluxe As a CheckFree user, Brett Wickens received a letter from Intuit last week. It said that the CheckFree service was being discontinued as of November 30. The letter was accompanied by a free copy of Quicken 98 Deluxe, provided to make sure he had a version that would allow switching over to the Internet-based Intuit online banking service (which costs $9.95/month).

Update: Jim Matt writes: "The information that I received states that the stand-alone CheckFree software for the Mac is being discontinued, and that they were sending out Quicken 98 so that one could still use CheckFree (through Quicken). I do not believe CheckFree support through Quicken is being discontinued." Others have confirmed this.

Release 4? One reader claims that his copy of Quicken 98 reads Release 4 (even though the latest update officially announced his Release 3). Intuit Tech Support told him that a Release 4 was released in conjunction with Quicken 99 for Windows. However, he also implied that the were really no differences between Release 3 and Release 4. [If you have more details about this supposed Release 4, let me know.]
