DiskLock update is coming Following up on a previous report, a reliable source confirms that Symantec is planning an eventual update to DiskLock.

CheckFree and Quicken: a follow-up Previously, we noted that end of CheckFree and the migration to Quicken 98 - via a free Quicken 98 Deluxe sent to all CheckFree customers. There is a CheckFree Web page that explains all the details. Contrary to some previous reader reports, it appears to state that CheckFree will no longer be available, even through the Quicken software. You must switch to Intuit's Online Payment program. (Thanks, Steve Watts.)

Hear sad Mac sounds without having a crash This may not be news to you but, thanks to reader David Sutherland, I just discovered that the Apple Spec database includes a feature that let's you hear the different startup crash sounds (i.e., the ones most often associated with a "sad Mac" appearing on your screen) for each different Mac model. It also plays the startup sounds.

Update: If you want to hear a better quality version of some of these sounds, check out this Web site.

Weird error message Several readers have reported getting a message that says: "'Name of application' has quit unexpectedly because the server that contains it has been disconnected." This happens even though there is no server connection at the time. This has happened to me once or twice.

Update: Many readers reported seeing this message.various explanations were offered. However, no single explanation emeged as the most likely one.

Windows and deleting icons: a follow-up Last time, I commented on the hassles of deleting certain icons from the desktops of Windows machines. A reader pointed out that Microsoft has a tool, called TweakUI, that supposedly simplifies this process. Brock Sides pointed out that, with desktop printer icons, even the Mac can sometimes have hassles moving and deleting icons.

Office to come preinstalled on a Mac Microsoft and Apple have announced an enhanced Power Macintosh G3 that comes with Microsoft Office 98. The estimated retail price is $1,799.
