Mail does not delete email from Comcast email servers?

MacFixIt reader Peter Stark reports an inconvenient conflict between Apple's Mail application and Comcast email servers:

"Comcast's email service does not accept the 'delete from server' command from Mail.app in OS 10.3 -- with the result that mail that the user thinks has been deleted automatically on download to the home computer remains on the server and must be deleted manually via [a Web] browser. It took me a while to figure out that this is what was clogging up my email account, since the problem didn't occur in 10.2x."
