Get a 2TB external hard drive for $69.99 shipped

No rebates! The Hitachi XL Desk offers a whopping two terabytes of external-storage goodness for just 70 bucks out the door.

Are you a new Cheapskate reader/subscriber? If so, welcome! Here are a few quick things you should know:

  • I have no control over when products sell out, prices go up, and so on. Everything is accurate at the time I write it.
  • Many deals are available only to U.S. customers, and unfortunately there's no easy way for me to know (or indicate) if a deal is also available in Canada or elsewhere.
  • If you subscribe to the Cheapskate newsletter, it should arrive daily around 1 p.m. ET. Alas, sometimes deals are over or out of stock by then. We're working on a way to send that e-mail blast the moment my deal gets posted. Stay tuned!

OK, on to business. Like I said the other day, I'm a sucker for cheap storage (among other things). And it rarely gets cheaper than this: Newegg has the Hitachi XL Desk 2TB external hard drive for $69.99 shipped. That's after applying coupon code EMCKCHB48 at checkout.

You need to be a Newegg newsletter subscriber in order to use that code. Thankfully, signing up is free and easy.

The XL Desk is a USB 2.0 drive that can stand upright, monolith-style, or sit flat. It's pleasingly curvy with a matte-black finish. Hitachi backs the drive with a one-year warranty.

Before you pull the trigger, I recommend perusing the user reviews. Although they're mostly positive, at least a few people reported problems soon after receiving the drive. (Also, one user noted the short USB cable, which could be an issue if you're connecting the drive to a floor-standing tower.)

Of course, it seems like every drive manufacturer ends up with a bad batch here and there. In other words, there's always a chance you'll get a bum drive. For what it's worth, Newegg has a great reputation for service if you end up needing a replacement (within 30 days).

Bonus deal: Can't get by on a measly 2TB? If you have a Staples store near you, walk in with this printable coupon and you can walk out with a Western Digital MyBook 3TB USB 3.0 external hard drive for $111.99, plus sales tax. Actually, the coupon is good for 20 percent off just about any single item. Nice!
