After months of testing and weeks of beta developer builds being issued, Apple has finally released the much-anticipated OS X 10.7.2 update for its latest Lion operating system. The update incorporates a slew of bug fixes and stability enhancements to the OS, but most of all it brings support for Apple's iCloud service, which was also opened to the public earlier today.

Even if you do not plan on using iCloud extensively, the 10.7.2 update is still recommended to address a number of issues with software and services in the initial releases of Lion, including:

Software Update
The update should be available via Apple's Software Update utility.
  • Allow reordering of desktop spaces and full screen apps in Mission Control.
  • Enable dragging files between desktop spaces and full screen apps.
  • Address an issue that causes the menu bar to not appear in full screen apps.
  • Improve the compatibility of Google contact syncing in Address Book.
  • Address an issue that causes Keynote to become temporarily unresponsive.
  • Improve VoiceOver compatibility with Launchpad.
  • Address an issue that causes a delay in accessing the network after waking from sleep.
  • Enable booting in to Lion Recovery from a locally attached Time Machine backup drive.
  • Resolve an issue that causes screen zoom to stop working.
  • Improve Active Directory integration.

In addition, the update includes RAW support for the following digital cameras, and enhances security by setting Disk Images and installer packages to no longer be considered "safe" file types, meaning Safari's automatic opening of safe files will not recognize these file types.

  • Konica Minolta DiMAGE A200
  • Olympus PEN E-P3
  • Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G3
  • Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF3
  • Samsung NX11
  • Samsung NX100
  • Sony Alpha NEX-C3
  • Sony Alpha SLT-A35

The update is available via Software Update for anyone running OS X Lion versions 10.7.0 or 10.7.1, and will be about 435MB in size when downloaded through Software Update. Standalone delta (768MB) and combo (818MB) updaters will also soon be available on Apple's support downloads page. As with prior versions of OS X, some people may wish to use the Combo updaters as these include all the changed files since the initial release of the OS and as such can sometimes help refresh altered files to fix problems people are having.

As always, before installing the update, be sure you have a full backup of your system either through using Time Machine or a system cloning utility. Additionally, if you have time, then you might consider running through a general maintenance routine or other update preparation steps before applying the update, to ensure that the update goes as smoothly as possible.

If for some reason the update does not work as expected, then you can restore your system to the backup you made and try again.
