UMAX VSControlStrip crashes: a solution?

UMAX VSControlStrip crashes: a solution?

CNET staff
We have previously reported problems (including system crashes) with the VSControlStrip file that ships with most UMAX scanners. In this regard, Dan Ogle writes: "After several attempts at finding a fix for the problem, a tech at UMAX finally directed me to the VistaScan package for the new Astra 4000U. He said to uninstall the original software and install this update (realize that if you want to use the other apps, OmniPage and the like, you'll need to keep those in there)." Do this even if you have another UMAX scanner (UMAX Astra 2000U, 2100U, 1220, 2200, 4000U, or MX3). It worked for Dan. However, this is a 21MB download (could be a pain to get if you are on a dial-up connection!). [See also this MacFixIt Forums thread.] However, it may not work for everyone. Robert Murray continued to have problems with this control strip module even on the 4000U itself. Finally, Chris Barth reports a Type 1010 unexpected quit when trying to use an Astra 220 connected to a G3-upgraded Power Mac 7100 - even when the VSControlStrip is not installed. He queries whether it might somehow be related to the bus speed issue reported here last week.
