Troubleshooting Safari 1.0: Application will not launch; BBEdit and GoLive Preview

Application will not launch Several readers have reported intermittent problems launching Safari, where the application will "bounce" in the Dock (if you have your Dock set to do so), but never finish launching.

Jason Wolford offers a crash log citation:

"2003-01-19 01:10:00.317 Safari[955] CFLog (0):
CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): plist parse failed; the data is not proper UTF-8. The file name for this data could be: com.apple.Safari.plist -- /Users/jasonwol/Library/Preferences/

"The parser will retry as in 10.1, but the problem should be corrected in the plist."

Removing this file "com.apple.Safari.plist" from user>library>preferences resolves the problem in most instances.

Getting GoLive, BBEdit to use Safari as a Preview browser We previously reported difficulty getting Safari to be properly accessible as a Preview browser in Adobe's GoLive and Bare Bones' BBEdit.

In BBEdit, Safari is not automatically added to the "currently running browsers" list in the HTML Tools menu. Instead, users must add the browser by accessing Preferences --> HTML Preview --> Add --> Safari.

With regard to GoLive, Daniel Leighton writes:

"Adding Safari to GoLive must be done manually, and instead of clicking the "Open" button after selecting either Safari or Chimera, click the "Add" button followed by the "Done" button. As obvious as these buttons are, they are easily overlooked since it's a fairly non-standard means of selecting an application for recognition by another application in an instance such as this.

"Unfortunately, once either browser is added, they still fail to load GoLive pages for viewing. Under Chimera, "Tabbed Browsing" must be set to "Reuses the existing window" or you will simply get a blank page (as you do in Safari). Even then, in Chimera, GoLive's temporary URL is formatted as:

("file:///Macintosh HD/Users/danielle/Sites/vitalstream/www/Temp$$$.html")

"with unnecessary parentheses and quotations, plus an extra "/" after "file:", making it impossible for Chimera to find the temporary URL unless these extra characters are removed manually."
