Troubleshooting QuickTime 6.4: Java issues; game issues; command-line installation hurdle

Don't install QuickTime 6.4 if you need QuickTime Java support under OS X 10.2 According to an Apple Knowledge Base article, QuickTime 6.4 does not include QuickTime Java support; installing it on OS X 10.2 will actually remove support provided by QuickTime 6.3. If you need this support, you can reinstall QuickTime 6.3 using the special reinstaller Apple has made available.

Game issues? According to MacFixIt reader Jim W., the game No One Lives Forever 2 does not function properly if QuickTime 6.4 is installed. The only solution right now is to revert to QuickTime 6.3.

Command-line installation hurdle Some users, especially in network environments, use the "softwareupdate" Terminal command to check for, and install, Apple software updates remotely. However, when installing QuickTime 6.4 on a remote computer using softwareupdate, the QuickTime installer still requires local interaction, as reported by MacFixIt reader Mike McHargue:

"I was updating a server room full of Mac OS X 10.2 Server and client machines via the command line tool softwareupdate.  Most of the machines stalled at the 50% mark installing the QuickTime 6.4 update. "I was getting ready to kill the process and reboot the machines when I decided to go check the machines directly.  The QuickTime registration screen was up on all the machines (even ones that were not logged in!).  I had to click continue on each box (or log in as user and click continue on machines displaying the login screen) and then the installation proceeded normally."
