Troubleshooting Mac OS X 10.3.x: "Recent Items" anomaly; Classic and Expos�; more

"Recent Items" anomaly Mark Rougeux describes a minor anomaly in Mac OS X 10.3.x for which we are seeking confirmation, and have not been able to reproduce in-house. The problem is simply that the "Recent Items" Documents section occasionally displays the wrong application icon for some items. Rougeux writes:

"I went to recent items and noticed the icons associated with a number of the documents was for the wrong application. Microsoft Word docs have an Address Book icon next to them, or a Software Update icon next to them. Interestingly, thus far, only the Word docs have the icon confusion. Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro icons are OK."

Classic and Exposé MacFixIt reader Jake Wexler points out some previously unmentioned improvements in the way Classic Windows are handled in Panther, and also notes the behavior of Exposé when Classic-drawn items are on the screen:

"Apple has improved the way Classic windows interact with Aqua ones. If a Classic window is in the background and an Aqua one is dragged over it, the shadow draws and updates properly, without the white ghosting effect from the redraw like in Jaguar. Also, if Exposé is activated with F9 or F10 (particularly in slo-mo), you can see that the Classic windows fade away while the Aqua ones rearrange themselves, and when it is invoked with F11 an odd (perhaps unintended) effect appears, like the Classic windows are trying to move also. It appears the Classic environment's windows have been patched into Quartz Extreme somehow. Finally, the menus now draw without the small white border on them in Classic apps."

System Profiler and RAM speed Douglas Kaer is one of several MacFixIt readers to point out that the System Profiler in Mac OS X 10.3.x will sometimes incorrectly report the rating of some manufacturers' RAM modules:

"The System Profiler in 10.3 incorrectly identifies RAM as being PC100 when it is PC133. I opened the case to confirm both of my RAM modules were PC133 and they were. They are also different manufacturers installed at different times. (in a Power Mac G4/867)"
