Another solution for enabling the "Others..." login item Yesterday we noted problems enabling "Others..." item at login when the login window is set to show a list of users under Mac OS X 10.3.

Now MacFixIt reader Matt Garrison offers another solution for re-enabling the item:

"After much tinkering around, I found that just running the niutil with no arguments in Terminal will fix the problem. You don't need to be root user -- just run 'niutil', and it will just yell at you for not telling it actually do anything, but it must rebuild its database or something in the meantime, because it made the option come back to me on both occasions."

The niutil program is generally used to add, delete, and modify users and groups from the shell.

In order to access the program (as described in the above workaround), you simply need to type "niutil" (without the quotation marks) at the user command prompt using the Terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal).

HP printer bug in Panther MacFixIt reader Denis Héraud has confirmed a bug that was introduced in HP printing that appeared in Mac OS 10.2.8 and remains in Mac OS X 10.3.

"When sending a print request to a 2300 printer (USB or Network) to the manual print tray (Selecting Tray 1 (Manual) in the Paper Feed options of the Print Dialog), the printer will not wait for you to insert anything and will automatically take a page out of tray 2. However, if the paper is inserted in the manual tray before the request is sent, it will print from the manual tray. This can be quite inconvenient when feeding many different types of paper because they have to be inserted before sending a command to print, and if a large base of users use the printer, each has to remember to insert the paper prior to sending the command.
