Troubleshooting Mac OS X 10.3 DP: Upgrade cards; Beige G3s

CNET staff

[As a preface to this report, it should be noted that Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) is still in a development stage, and cannot be judged as a final - or even beta - product. Accordingly, this report is merely for developers attempting to work around issues with the current iteration]

Processor upgrade cards We are receiving initial reports of difficulty using the Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) DP release with upgrade cards from a number of manufacturers.

One anonymous developer writes:

"I tried to install Panther on an AGP 450 that I have upgraded with a Sonnet 1.2 GHz card. I have not been able to boot from the CD to install. Keep getting the dark grey screen telling me to reboot.

"People at Sonnet have been at the WWDC and said they were not surprised that it was not working yet."

Beige G3s While developers continue to note problems installing and running Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) on stock Beige Power Macintosh G3 systems, some users with add-on PCI USB expansion cards are having limited success:

"I have had it running on an old beige G3 with an orange micro card that has usb and firewire. It is functioning well (not as fast as a G4) but it gets by. The fast user switching works after it loads (the spin) in memory. It seems the more memory you have the better."
