Troubleshooting Mac OS X 10.3.2 (or Security Update 12-09-2003): Slow Xserve copying

There is an issue with slow copying (specifically writing) and xServes, as well as xServe RAID configurations.

Linda Plessett writes "Has anyone commented on the recent Mac OS X updaters (since December), that they have noticed files take much longer to copy to the Xserve? For example, it took several hours to copy 1 gig to server, when last November that may have taken only 5-10 minutes."

The general consensus is that this problem is caused by either the security update Apple released on December 19th, or the Mac OS X 10.3.2 update. The only known workaround for users who need to use AppleTalk is to downgrade to Mac OS X 10.3.0 (virgin from the install CD) or Mac OS X 10.2.8 and refrain from installing the 12-19-03 Security Update.

For users who do not need AFP AppleTak access, some users have suggested switching to an SMB share by changing the server connection string from 'afp:/at/server' to 'smb://IP address.'
