Does TechTool Pro work with PCI-card connected drives? Probably Jeff Bernstein writes that TechTool Pro cannot repair problems with drives that are connected to the Mac via a PCI SCSI card. This problem is especially noteworthy in light of the fact that the new G3s do not have an SCSI port connected to the logic board. At Macworld Expo, a representative of MicroMat told Jeff that they were working to resolve this issue. However, Alan Reynolds writes that TechTool Pro does work fine with his Adaptec 2940UW card. Others have now chimed in that this is not a problem for them. I have contacted MicroMat for further clarification.

TechTool: printing crash Reader Boyd got a system crash every time he tried to print out TechTool 1.1.8's registration form. MicroMat replied: "There is a known problem with some third party print drivers, such as Epson, that will be corrected in the next release of TechTool."

Disk repair utilities comparative review In related news, the February 99 issue of Mac Home Journal has a comparative review of TechTool Pro, Norton Utilities and DiskWarrior. TechTool Pro received the highest rating. DiskWarrior was slightly behind, mainly because it did not have the breadth of TechTool. [See previous MacFixIt item for references to other reviews.]

MacMedic 1.1 (January release) update Meanwhile, MacMedic has been quietly updated to version 1.1. The disk optimization feature is still not included but is promised for the next update (due out in April).

Update: Total Recall informs us that the optimization feature will be released as a patch as soon as it is available. They hope to have it out prior to April.
