Startup freeze when using an external Zip drive

CNET staff
A new Apple TIL file (#24599) describes a startup freeze with Power Macintosh G3 All-in-one computers if an external Zip drive is connected. This sounds similar to issues reported here before (a and b). Here's what Apple says is happening:
The Iomega driver which ships preinstalled on Power Macintosh G3 All-in-one computers is an IDE driver, which doesn't appear to work with external (SCSI) Zip drives. If the computer is started with an external Zip drive connected, it will freeze during the startup process. If the Iomega driver is removed from the Extensions folder, and a Zip disk is inserted at startup, the computer starts normally and the Zip disk will mount, since the appropriate driver is being loaded from the Zip disk at startup.

The issue can be resolved by installing the Iomega driver which shipped with the external Zip drive, or by downloading an appropriate SCSI Zip driver from Iomega's web site.

Update: A couple of readers have questioned the accuracy of this report, noting that they successfully used the driver that shipped with the Mac with an external SCSI drive.
