Startup crash after installing Audio Update linked to Mac OS ROM file

CNET staff
Not every user appears to have this problem, but:

Two readers (John Selinger and Robert Stransky) reported a similar problem after installing the Mac OS 9 Audio Update 1.1 (noted here yesterday). Their Macs (and iMac and an G3/BW) hung at startup due to "wrong version" of the Mac OS ROM file. In both cases, they booted from another drive and replaced the ROM file from the Audio Update with the one from the Mac OS 9 CD. This eliminated the startup crash. The Audio Update extensions remained enabled. However, it is not clear what effects this has on the fixes supposedly provided by the Update.

Apple confirms getting several similar reports. They are investigating. (Thanks, Roger Rodby.)
