Sony S1 and S2 Android tablet details revealed, same options as the iPad

Psst. Over here -- did anyone follow you? Are you sure? Good, then we can reveal more details on the Sony S1 and S2 tablets, Sony's forthcoming Android-based rivals to the iPad.

Our transatlantic chums at CNET News in the US chatted with a deep throat who knows the ins and outs of Sony's tablet plans. There will be four versions of the S1, according to the source. All the tablets come with Wi-Fi, but you can choose how much memory you want, and whether you prefer 3G or just Wi-Fi.

The S1 will come with either 16GB or 32GB of storage, and either with or without 3G. In other words, the same options as the iPad.

The S2 will also come with 16GB or 32GB of memory, and both come with 3G. There's no cheaper version of the S2 with just Wi-Fi.

The S1 features a 9.4-inch IPS display with TruBlack and Bravia display technologies, borrowed from Sony's Bravia TVs. Other Sony technology that'll play nice with the new tablets include the PlayStation 3 and Blu-ray players. You'll be able to share music and video with your home cinema setup via DLNA or use the tablet as a remote control.

Panasonic does something similar with iPhone, iPad and Android apps, with a Viera tablet in the works.

The S1 also packs an SD card slot, so you can swap in a memory card from your camera or other device. Accessories will include a dock and Bluetooth keyboard.

One final tidbit from the mysterious S1 informant is that the tablets will get proper official names when they're released -- but the names won't be too different from the S1 and S2 monikers. Judging by the way Sony names televisions, that'll be the Sony S1-ATi2YRSTLgb2012 then.
